German police searching for Pakistani man after knife attack

BERLIN: Police in the German town of Giessen are searching for a Pakistani man suspected of attempted murder.

Sources said on August 27, around 1pm, a 32-year-old man attempted to kill his 27-year-old former girlfriend in her apartment at Max-Reger-Straße in Giessen city, located close to Frankfurt.

The woman was seriously injured from severe knife attacks.

Police identified the suspect as a Pakistani citizen — who Tanneer Akhtar alias Rashid Mahmood.

Akhtar has been on the run following the attack.

The prosecutor's office in Giessen applied for an arrest warrant to the concerned district court to arrest Akhtar after the incident.

Sources said Akhtar has been living in Germany since 2010 and recently lived in an asylum accommodation in the city.

Police have also released details of the suspect and ask citizens to contact the criminal investigation department in Giessen if they have any information. They said Akhtar is 176 centimetre tall and slim. He was last seen wearing gray jogging trousers and a purple t-shirt, and is mainly noticeable by a star-shaped scar under his left eye, they added.
