Umar apprises IMF of steps taken to expand tax net

Finance Minister Asad Umar on Wednesday held talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission chief in Pakistan via video-link for a financial bailout, almost a month after the financial body’s delegation visited Islamabad.
Sources said that Umar informed Harold Finger of reforms and governance in state institutions as well as steps taken by government to expand tax net.
He was also apprised of the prices of gas and electricity and steps taken to stop power theft.
The incumbent government announced to approach IMF in September in order to contain a brewing financial crisis in the country. An IMF delegation visited last month and the two sides decided to continue talks over video-link.
The IMF delegation will again visit Pakistan in the second week of January.
The IMF on Tuesday said that Pakistan’s the debt profile will be assessed, adding that it will consider the details of the previously taken loans before giving new loans.
Director Communications Department IMF Gerry Rice said that it will be ensured that the country's debt profile is sustainable and the executive board will take a decision on giving Pakistan a loan in future.
