Joker star Joaquin Phoenix crashes car into LA County truck

American actor Joaquin Phoenix on Friday hit the vehicle of Los Angeles County Fire Department, but escaped without charges, according to a report in American tabloid TMZ

Law enforcement officials told the American publication that Joaquin was making a right turn out of a parking lot in West Hollywood when his Tesla scraped the bumper of an unoccupied paramedic truck. 

The actor tracked down the drivers of the vehicle to confess his mistake, and got widespread praise for this action, as he escaped without a ticket or any fine, according to TMZ

The car Phoenix was driving, a Tesla, suffered extensive damage, but the truck got away with only a scratch on the bumper. Law enforcement sources say Joaquin was cordial and easy to deal with,

Last week, the Los Angeles Police Department had planned to step up its visibility around movie theatres for the opening of Joker, a movie Phoenix stars in, because of heightened fears over the film content.

A police spokeswoman told AFP that while there have been no credible threats in the Los Angeles area, "the department will maintain high visibility around movie theatres when (the film) opens".

The Warner Bros film portrays its murderous outcast villain, played by Joaquin Phoenix, as a hero and some critics have suggested the movie could incite violence.

Joker was released seven years after 12 people were killed in Aurora, Colorado when a gunman opened fire during a screening of Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.
