Apart from the human tragedy that COVID-19 has unfolded with a surging number of cases, the deadly disease has also led to economic upheaval, soaring numbers of domestic violence and a rise in anxiety overall.

According to an article published by Friday Magazine, here are 10 ways to fightback anxiety and all the heart-rending thoughts that surface during quarantine period:

1. Keep things in perspective

Remember, many of us suffering from coronavirus will show mild symptoms and will recover from it. Therefore, stick to the recommended guidelines relating to precautionary measures to keep yourself and your family protected. This situation is not normal and will not last forever!

2. We are in this together

It is important to remind yourself that you are not alone in the boat. This is a collective experience and one that we need to work together to help manage.

3. Lend a helping hand

In these times of crisis, helping others does make the situation better. Turn your attention towards others who may need your help, particularly those with limitations, aged 60 years and above, and those with underlying health conditions, who are most at risk. This will shift your focus to something productive.

4. Limit media exposure

Remember, the age-old adage 'ignorance is a bliss'? While it is crucial to keep updated with reliable information from the government and official health organisations about preventing and managing the outbreak, you should curtail your exposure to social media updates, which can exacerbate stress and worry what with the constant barrage of information and stats.

5. Dress to impress

Be strict and try to stick to your ‘normal’ daytime hours and routine as far as possible. Get dressed and out of your nightwear/loungewear every morning.

6. Communication is the key

Whether with family, friends or work colleagues, it’s of extreme importance to stay connected on a daily basis. Supportive chats and messages are a great way to help keep morale and spirits up during this challenging time.

7. Relish family meals

Mealtimes provide the perfect way to jam with family members. Relish some quality time together. Take the time to prepare and cook meals together and even try out new recipes. Make a point of dressing-up for dinner on the weekend.

8. Ensure me-time

No matter how difficult and busy your schedules get, ensure that you have saved time for yourself. This will help you to recollect your thoughts and appreciate the finer things in life.

9. A healthy mind lives in a healthy body

It’s key to follow a healthy diet, to keep hydrated, get enough sleep and stay active throughout the day. Stick to your usual routine and day-to-day activities where you can.

10. Reach out when in need

Engaging with a therapist using a confidential platform can provide you the space to experience the emotions and understand them, thus allowing you to move through this time without a long-term impact on your mental health.
