  • BJP leaders announce Muhammadpur is renamed to Madhavpuram.
  • Party's Delhi leader says old Muslim names are symbols of slavery despite 75 years of independence.
  • Delhi BJP also plans to send proposals to Kejriwal government to rename 40 more villages.

The BJP leaders in Delhi announced in a ceremony that South Delhi's  "Muhammadpur" village is going to be renamed "Madhavpuram", NDTV reported.

Adesh Gupta, the party's Delhi unit president, posed in front of a board that welcomed people to Madhavpuram.

Publishing pictures of himself with the workers at the site on Twitter, Gupta captioned the post, "Completed the naming process of Madhavpuram today after a proposal was passed by the municipal corporation."

"Now this village will be known as Madhavpuram instead of Muhammadpur. No Delhiites want to be associated with any symbol of slavery despite 75 years of Independence," he added.

He said that the case was taken forward by the locals and BJP workers. The South Municipal Corporation of Delhi passed the proposal to change the name, forwarding it to the Delhi government.

NDTV reported that Delhi BJP also plans to send proposals to Kejriwal government to rename 40 more villages.

"These 40 villages include Humayunpur, Yusuf Sarai, Masoodpur, Zamroodpur, Begumpur, Saidul Ajab, Fatehpur Beri, Hauz Khas, and Sheikh Sarai to name a few," he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party has said that the BJP is looking for chances to start hooliganism.
