Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes' father Pat Mahomes Sr was arrested Saturday by police in Tyler, Texas, on a charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI), Yahoo Sports reported.
Mahomes Sr was charged, according to jail records, and later freed on a $10,000 bail.
The charge against the arrested person was "driving while intoxicated, third or more". Two prior DWI offences, one from 2012 and one from 2018, are also listed in the jail records.
His arrest on Saturday left details unclear right away.
However, the Kansas City Star reported that Mahomes Sr entered a guilty plea to his 2018 DWI offence and was sentenced to 40 days in jail.
The former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher served the sentence on weekends over a span from 2019 to 2020.
The arrest arrives days before his son Patrick is scheduled to lead the Chiefs offence in the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.
The 28-year-old quarterback is seeking his third Super Bowl ring and third Super Bowl MVP trophy.
Mahomes Sr is a retired professional athlete who played 11 MLB seasons as a pitcher for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1992 to 2003.
He also pitched in two seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball in 1997 and with the Yokohama BayStars in 1998. He last played with the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the independent American Association in 2009.
