Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, found itself under lockdown on Thursday following reports of an active shooter situation.

The incident unfolded around 10:30am MST, prompting immediate action from base authorities who swiftly implemented FPCON Delta, effectively halting all activities on the base except for security measures.

The suspected real-world threat originated at building 219, prompting a coordinated response from the Air Force and emergency personnel. While the exact number of injuries remains undisclosed, Malmstrom officials have stressed the importance of public cooperation in keeping a safe distance from the affected area.

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte expressed his concern, saying, "We have been in contact with General Hronek regarding the reports of an active shooter alert on the Malmstrom Air Force Base. I will continue to monitor the situation with the general."

Similarly, US Democratic Senator Jon Tester assured continued tracking of the developing situation closely, highlighting the significance of a swift and measured response.

Local authorities, including the Great Falls Montana Police Department, played a crucial role in containing the incident, providing security and support to both the base and nearby schools. The coordinated efforts have been effective, with the lockdown lifted for most local schools, except for Chief Joseph and Loy elementary schools, where students are remaining inside their classrooms as a precaution.

The gravity of the situation was reflected in the base's official statement issued at 11:57am, indicating the timeline of events and the deployment of FPCON Delta.

The call for public cooperation echoed throughout, emphasising the role of the community in minimising potential injuries and enabling base agencies to manage the situation effectively.

As the situation continues to unfold, Malmstrom Air Force Base remains vigilant, with nearly 3,300 troops and over 500 civilians working at the base, along with approximately 2,300 civilians residing on-site.
