'Form 47' parliamentarians ineligible to lead Pakistan, says Hafiz Naeem after assuming JI emir office

Newly elected Jaamat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman formally took oath of his office during a ceremony at Mansoora in Lahore on Thursday.

The outspoken politician became the sixth emir of the religio-political party after receiving over 80% of the votes during the JI intra-party elections earlier this month. He would remain the party's chief till 2029.

Emotional scenes were witnessed during the oath-taking ceremony as Naeem burst into tears after former JI former emir Sirajul Haque hugged him.

On the occasion, other senior JI leaders congratulated him for assuming the top office and prayed for his steadfastness in connection with the party’s ideology and goals.

Addressing the event, the JI emir said: “We want to bring [Islamic] revolution through democratic process and by the power of people.”

He added: “The Jaamat-e-Islami will lead the entire nation.”

Naeem said that his party considered politics as “worship”, adding that every worker of the JI will protect ideology of Pakistan.

Lauding the Pakistan’s constitution, he said that it provides rights to every citizen. Blasting the establishment, the JI leader said: “Those who have been running the system for 76 years should declare that they have failed."

Moving on to the alleged “rigging and results tempering” during the February 8 general elections, the JI leader said that those elected lawmakers on the basis of Form 47 were not fit to lead Pakistan.

The JI leader was of the view that they did not have any conflict with any individual or a political party. “We will talk to everyone.”

“We are not in hurry to get seats in elections,” he announced and asked his workers to prepare for a nationwide movement.

Hinting at countrywide mass motivation campaign against alleged rigging in the polls, the new JI emir said: “We will make an alliance with 250 million people of Pakistan.”

“This country has no other choice by the Jaamat-e-Islami. If the system is democratic, then democracy should not be violated. We will stand with everyone who has been defeated by Form47.”

Commenting on the country’s overall situation, the JI leader said: “Everyone will have to g back to their constitutional position as everyone is stuck in a deadlock.”

He also raises questions over delay in Pak-Iran gas pipe line project and IMF’s role in averting taxes on landlords.

“We will not let India to become the policeman of the region,” he added.
