Taylor Swift just faced backlash which stemmed from lyrics the artist sang in one of her tracks belonging to the album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.

The 34-year-old singer’s track, I Hate It Here, features Swift singing about how she and her friends are not satisfied with living in the current times.

“My friends used to play a game where / We would pick a decade / We wished we could live in instead of this / I’d say the 1830s but without all the racists / And getting married off for the highest bid,” the 14-time Grammy winning songstress sang.

Shortly after listening to the song, fans quickly took to their X (formerly Twitter) accounts to call out the fact that slavery was still legalized in America back in the 1830s.

“There is no way Taylor Swift said she’d like to live in an era where Chattel Slavery was the law of the land and say ‘but without the racists.’ Like it was some casual microaggressions or something. Is this what we’re doing??” a fan wrote.

While another tweeted, “pretty astonishing to stipulate that she wants to live in the 1830s, ‘except without the racists,’ and not mention slavery, so slavery still exists but everyone’s chill about it.”

Taylor Swift released her album, The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, 2024 and released its surprise second part, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology as her “2am surprise” to fans.
