Elton John has revealed that he broke his engagement to a woman before his rise in the music industry.
In the documentary David Frost Vs Elton John, the singer recalls why he had to call off his wedding.
In an interview from 1975, Frost asked John, “What’s the most emotional song you’ve ever done — the most meaningful, emotional song?”
To which John, who was 27 at the time, replied, “There are two very emotional songs. They are also two very autobiographical songs. One’s called ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight.’”
Explaining what the song was about, he said, "Well, I was living with a lady for about six months who didn’t really like my music."
The Cold Heart hitmaker continued, "I really liked her, but she didn’t like my music and kept telling me that I was rubbish and I’d never make it. And she was always saying, ‘You’d be better off being a bank manager or something like that.’ And I was due to marry her. I got the cake and everything and the flat and the furniture."
That evening, the singer went out and met legendary English musician Long John Baldry, who gave him bold advice.
“He said, ‘You’re mad to get married, because she doesn’t appreciate your music,' " John recounted.
"And he knew I was totally wrapped up in music. So I went home and said, ‘That’s it. It’s off.’ And that more or less saved my life because if I’d have got married at that particular point in time, I think it would have been goodbye, Elton John,” he remarked.
Thankfully for his fans, Elton John didn’t listen to his fiancée and pursued music, going on to make music for six decades and giving fans memorable hits like Daniel, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word, and many more.
