Anthropic has suspended its newly released most powerful AI tool, Claude Fable 5, weeks after the U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing AI companies to grant the administration a voluntary oversight over their AI tools.
Claude Fable 5, which the company described as “too powerful”, was released on June 9, 2026.
The AI technology company shared a statement regarding the suspension of its AI tool, revealing that it was directed by the U.S. government due to a national security concern.
It said, “The access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers was abruptly disabled to ensure compliance.”
The government did not share details of the concerns; however, Anthropic’s understanding was the government had detected a “jailbreaking” method for Fable 5.
Jailbreaking is a process of bypassing restrictions put in place to protect the cyber network, it allows hackers to bypass safeguards and access sensitive information.
Despite following the government’s directive, the AI giant also expressed displeasure over the U.S. government’s decision, saying, “We disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people.”
Anthropic apologised to its customers for the disruption.
This comes amid the AI giant and government are entangled in a separate issue over the use of its AI model by the Pentagon.
Anthropic has drawn redlines over the use of its most powerful tools in autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance.
