Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028, marking a major shift towards a fully digital distribution model.
All new PlayStation titles launched after January 2028 will be available only in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers, according to PlayStation.Blog.
The change will not affect games that have already been released, or those scheduled for release on physical discs before the deadline.
Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits and broader trends across the entertainment industry, where digital purchases and downloads have increasingly overtaken physical discs.
The company described the move as a natural evolution aimed at aligning its business with how most players now access and play games.
Sony added that the transition would allow it to focus resources on improving game accessibility and expanding purchasing options across both the PlayStation Store and retail channels.
Despite the shift away from physical media, Sony reiterated its commitment to delivering a high-quality gaming experience and thanked PlayStation users for their continued support.
