Trump posts map labeling Strait of Hormuz as US territory: Iran responds

United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has posted a controversial map claiming the acquisition of a new territory in the Middle East amid the war against Iran.

The 47th POTUS shared a picture of a map showing the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil trade route, currently blocked by Iran for commercial shipping and claimed that it was a new U.S. territory.

It is pertinent to note that the Strait of Hormuz is particularly significant because around one-fifth of global oil passes through it.

The new post by the 80-year-old Republican president aligns with his earlier remarks about controlling the Strait through a naval blockade, which has been in effect since April 13.

It was temporarily lifted in June and was reinstated the next month.

President Trump’s supporters argued that claiming the new territory, though not officially under the U.S. control, show the president’s resolve to fight against Islamic Republic; whereas, critics pointed to inconsistencies in U.S. standards for nuclear weapons and terror funding.

Speaker of the Parliament of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reacted to Trump's social media post and insisted that the strait will remain closed until the blockade lifts, regional wars end, stolen assets return, oil sanctions ease and threats stop.
