Queen Sonja is facing an especially poignant anniversary this weekend, remembering King Harald V on the date that would have marked 58 years of marriage to the man she loved for more than six decades.
She was seen looking out from a palace window at the crowds gathered to honour her late husband who died peacefully at Rikshospitalet in Oslo on Friday, August 28, aged 89.
Standing beside her were two family members believed to be Princess Märtha Louise and Maud Angelica Behn.
Saturday was due to be another milestone for the Norwegian royal couple.
Football star Erling Haaland remembered Harald as someone it had been “an honour” to meet.
Queen Sonja was visibly grief-stricken as she accompanied her late husband on his final journey to the Royal Palace in Oslo.
The Queen travelled in a black car alongside their daughter, Princess Märtha Louise, as the King’s coffin was taken from the National Hospital’s chapel shortly after 6:30 p.m. local time.
The family came together as the late monarch’s body was transferred to the palace, almost 12 hours after his death.
Märtha Louise’s husband, Durek Verrett, also paid an emotional tribute to his father-in-law on Instagram.
Sharing a post from HELLO!, he expressed his love for the late King before describing Harald as “the most amazing man with a heart of pure gold.”
He later added: “Love you dad I will miss all our fun times together.”
