Princess Diana's brother feared backlash as he shuts comments on tribute

Princess Diana’s brother chose to turn off the comments on the emotional post on her anniversary. 

Earl Charles Spencer marked 29 years since Diana's death with a poignant social media tribute, while restricting the public response beneath it.

This comes after Spencer faces renewed attention surrounding his upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, in which he plans to share his own memories of the late Princess of Wales ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death.

Diana would have turned 65 in July this year. 

Her brother's book is due to be published in September and will offer his personal account of the woman the world came to know as the People's Princess.

Spencer has explained that his decision to write the book followed years of requests for interviews and the growing frustration of seeing other people's versions of his sister's life repeated as fact.

“With the 30th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death on the skyline, I've been inundated yet again with requests for interviews about my sister,” he said.

“This has convinced me to write down my own thoughts and memories, once and for all, rather than having the discomfort of again reading the opinions of others, many of which are based on untruths that have become accepted over time.”

The Earl said he wanted the memoir to present Diana through the eyes of someone who knew her not as a royal figure or global icon, but as his sister.

“As with my eulogy, I want to speak on Diana's behalf and do so in an openly positive way.”
