United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has suggested renaming another strategic location just weeks after changing Lake Ontario to Lake America.
However, this time he’s going global and wants to rename the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil trade route from where around one-fifth of global oil shipments pass.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the 80-year-old Republican president claimed that the U.S. has achieved complete control over the Strait of Hormuz and suggested that the strategic waterway should be named after him.
He wrote, “Now that we it under U.S.A control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before.”
He concluded his post with signature remarks, “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The Strait of Hormuz has been declared closed for commercial shipping with permission by Iran amid renewed escalation between the two countries; however, the US maintains that the waterway is navigable without any threats.
The Strait connects Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and it is considered one of the most strategically important energy routes.
Despite the U.S. claims, shipping data suggests traffic remains far below normal levels. Only four commodity vessels passed through the strait on Tuesday, compared with a 10-day average of about 13 vessels, according to preliminary data from ship-tracking company Kpler.
Trump’s proposed name change is not an official renaming of the waterway, but rather a suggestion made in his social media post.
