Matt Suhey, legendary 1985 Super Bowl star, Chicago Bears fullback, dies aged 68

Matt Suhey, an iconic Chicago fullback who won Super Bowl XX with the team, died at age 68 on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

The former Chicago Bears running back and member of the legendary 1985 Super Bowl championship team was remembered for helping the Bears win the title.

Suhey spent a 10-year NFL stint with the Bears and appeared in college football at Penn State University.

Suhey, known for being the lead blocker for Hall of Fame Walter Payton, scored the first touchdown that helped the Bears win the Super Bowl XX against the New England Patriots.

He was recognised as one of the greatest of all time who wore a jersey for the Bears.

Suhey posted a total of 5,059 yards, combined rushing and receiving, while scoring 25 career TDs.

He announced his retirement in 1989, three years after winning a Super Bowl XX championship for the franchise, the only title the Bears had won so far.

Being an active fullback, Suhey never missed a single game in his decade-long NFL career while appearing for the Bears, the only team he had associated with.

Suhey has always been available for his teammates; after he announced his retirement, he even introduced Bears legend Jim Covert at Covert’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction for the Centennial Class.
