Matt Cord scraps retirement plans, announces return for 29th season as Sixers announcer

Matt Cord, Philadelphia 76ers public announcer, has announced his return to the franchise one last season.

Cord revealed the news while appearing on a Philadelphia-based radio station, 93.3 WMMR, on Wednesday morning.

While explaining what influenced his decision to scrap his retirement plans for one more season, he said, “They made a trade for Jaylen Brown on July 1, and then on July 24, LeBron James signed with the Sixers.”

Cord announced his retirement in March through an X (formerly called Twitter) post that the Sixers’ 2025-26 campaign will be his last on the assignment.

“After 28 years as the PA announcer for the Sixers I’m officially retiring at the end of the season,” said Cord at the time.

Cord had developed his own distinctive style over the course of 28 years, from announcing the Sixers and starting centre as “Joel The Process Embiid” to calling buckets for “Allen Liiiiiii-verson.”

The Sixers shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) and captioned, “The VOICE IS BACK.”

Cord’s voice has been featured in NBA 2K video games.

He currently hosts a midday show on the Philadelphia radio station 93.3 WMMR.
