Dubai airport to enforce stricter baggage rules

Dubai airport authorities have decided to introduce stricter baggage rules to ensure efficient handling of check-in and baggage operations.

Passengers will be required to carry bags with a flat surface and no oversized, irregular-shaped or round bags would be allowed by airport authorities, according to the new rules to come into effect on March 8, 2017.

Ali Angizeh, Vice President of Terminal Operations at Dubai International, said that “even the most technologically advanced [baggage] systems can be disrupted by irregular shaped or oversized bags.”

"These jams can shut down sections of our system, delay baggage delivery to the aircraft and inconvenience our customers," he said.

All airlines operating in the airport have been informed of the new regulations by the authorities.

The Dubai International Airport’s baggage handling system, spread over 140KM, is among the largest in the world.
