A video purportedly showing school students in the south-western Indian state of Karnataka reenacting the infamous demolition of the Babri mosque by Hindu extremists has sparked outrage on social media.
In a video shared on Twitter by Indian politician Srivatsa YB, the students, both male and female, can be seen charging at a giant poster of the mosque placed in the middle of a ground.
After tearing the poster down to huge applause from the crowd, the students then proceed to replace the poster of the mosque with a large poster of a Hindu temple.
In the video, the flag of the extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) can also be seen in the background. According to Free Press Journal, RSS leader Kalladka Bhat owns the school where the incident took place.
Commenting on the video, Srivasta warned of the grave consequences of politicising the children. "This is the future of education in India when the RSS-BJP takeover of society is complete," he said."This is why it's our duty to resist."
Violent protests had erupted in India earlier this year when the Supreme Court gave a controversial judgement in the 1992 mosque demolition case.
In 1992, extremists had torn the mosque to the ground, alleging that it was built on stolen land, demanding that a temple be built on the site. Subsequently, a lengthy court battle had ensued over the demolition and the control of the site.
Earlier this year, the Indian top court awarded the land of the demolished mosque to the Hindus, dismissing the claims of a Muslim petitioner over ownership of the area. Legal experts had slammed the one-sided order.
