Dutch flower industry wilts due to coronavirus

The Dutch flower industry witnessed a sharp decline due to the coronavirus pandemic across the world, damaging trade. 

“It is tulip season in Holland but growers are destroying millions of flowers,” stated an AFP report in March.

The flowers were destroyed as demand dropped, demolishing 80% of the total Dutch flower production.

“This is really the first time that we have to do this, the Dutch auction exists for more than 100 years, and this is the first time that we are in such a crisis,” said one of the flower growers.

Tackling the problem

According to The Guardian report, more than 1,000 companies stepped forward to join an initiative aimed at saving the wilting industry.

The flowers are now handed over to passersby and hospital staff etc to sustain the industry and save the production.
