Football superstar Clarence Seedorf has embraced Islam and has thanked his wife for teaching him the “in-depth meaning of Islam." However, he plans to keep his original name as opposed to choosing a Muslim one.

Seedorf, a Dutch football superstar, announced on his Instagram that he is “joining the Muslim family” on March 4.

“A special thanks to all the nice messages," he wrote in the caption, as reported by The Middle East Eye.

He has been part of three English Premier League clubs — AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Ajax— as a midfielder, and is the only footballer who has won the Champions League with three different teams.

"I'm very happy and pleased to join all the brothers and sisters around the world, especially my adorable [wife] Sophia [Makramati] who has taught me more in-depth the meaning of Islam,” he said.

Seedorf added that he does not want to change the name that his parents assigned him and will continue to be called Clarence Seedorf.

Seedorf speaks at least six languages and has played in UEFA European Football Championships, 1998 FIFA World Cup, and the Dutch national team 87 times.

He has been working as a coach ever since he retired. Last year, he founded the Seedorf-Khabib Performance Club with one of most influential Muslim martial artists, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The two athletes have said that they have founded the organisation with the hope of “giving something back to the young generations," per The Middle East Eye.

"We are going to bring in the knowledge, the coaches and methodology, monitoring and supporting from a marketing point of view to support the growth of each venue and each partnership."
