Neil the Seal, a 600kg southern elephant seal from Tasmania, has gained viral fame and social media celebrity status, amassing over 45,000 followers on Instagram.

However, marine experts and local authorities are expressing growing concerns about the impact of his rising popularity on his well-being.

Despite Neil's playful antics making headlines and capturing the attention of people globally, experts emphasise the need to remember that he is a wild animal.

Mary-Anne Lea, a professor from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania, cautions that as Neil grows in size, natural behaviours and hormonal changes can lead to unpredictable interactions.

Neil's escapades have included blocking car access, lying in front of local businesses, and causing disruptions, prompting worries about potential dangers.

Southern elephant seals, according to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, can become dangerous if harassed, as they can move swiftly with their considerable bulk.

The Instagram account dedicated to Neil's adventures initially aimed to educate Tassie locals about his behaviour.

However, concerns about his safety have led the account holder, after consulting with marine biologists, to stop sharing his real-time location.

The increasing interest from TikTokers and the potential for human interaction has raised alarms.

Lea draws parallels with the case of Freya the walrus, whose interactions with humans in Norway led to euthanasia due to safety concerns.

While Neil's antics may seem amusing, experts stress the importance of respecting his wild nature and providing a respectful distance to ensure his long and healthy life in Tasmanian waters.
