Aaron Sorkin hinted fans about a possible sequel to The Social Network.
On The Town podcast with Mathew Belloni, the American playwright teased writing a potential follow-up film to the 2010 movie which explored Mark Zuckerberg's story and the inception of Facebook.
However, this instalment will be focused on Facebook’s role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection (United States Capitol attack), prompting the host to call it a ‘quasi-sequel’ of the original film.
“I blame Facebook for January 6”, said Aaron before quipping that he couldn’t explain the connection at the moment and that Mathew had to “buy a movie ticket” to find out.
Explaining his thesis, the film director added, “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement”.
“That is what will get you to, what they call inside the hallways of Facebook, the infinite scroll.”
Suggesting that there should be ‘constant tension’ on social media platforms to balance ‘growth and integrity’, the 62-year-old alleged that it’s ‘just growth’ for Zuckerberg.
He also proposed that the spread of divisive misinformation on the social media platform could be prevented if one day the founder of the networking site wakes up and decides to “make less money” through “tune up integrity and tune down growth”.
Nonetheless, the chairman of Meta platform has also admitted the role his online community played in the capitol attack and acknowledged the need for moderation in its policies.
