Maya Rudolf shies away from ‘mean comedy’

Maya Rudolf has set some boundaries for her comedy sketches and revealed methods she preferred in her comedic performances.

In a recent interview for Town & Country's May cover, the 51-year-old actress discussed her comedy strengths and weaknesses.

“I have a really hard time with mean comedy. Those things that are like, ‘Oh, I’m being funny, but I’m making fun of you?' I can’t watch it. I can’t stomach it. And it doesn’t feel good coming out of me," Rudolph admitted.

While sharing details about her "mean comedy" sketches during her SNL tenure she revealed that she tried to develop a character based on a friend’s “really f------ annoying girlfriend”.

The comedian went on to say, “those are the characters that stand out, you know? You’re in a room like this, and you’re seeing somebody really obnoxious, and you think, ‘Oh my god, that would make a great character’.”

However, the Bridesmaids actress soon realized she didn't "want to hear this person talk.”

Moreover, she also wrote sketches on Beyoncé, Oprah, and Whitney Houston as she just “wanted to be, like, this fabulous woman."

“I think a lot of my impressions come from watching people because I love them and I’m obsessed with them, and I want to be them somehow,” she continued, adding, “So when I started getting to play Beyoncé, I felt like, I know how to do this. Because it’s the same thing I did when I was little.”

For those unversed, Maya is known for her performance on Saturday Night Live as well as her roles in several films, including Bridesmaids and Grown Ups and most recently Loot.
