The 2025 Golden Globes nominations have recognized the excellence of the best movies and TV shows that came out in 2024, yet made some shocking snubs in various categories.

The most unexpected snubs came in the category of Best Director, where Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light) were nominated.

Shockingly, directors of some of the greatest box office hits this year were left out. Wicked director John M. Chu wasn’t nominated, despite the movie being hailed by critics, and its lead Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo scoring nominations.

Similarly, Denis Villeneuve was snubbed despite Dune: Part Two getting a Best Picture – Drama nomination. The movie was released earlier this year to a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and rave reviews, as well as immense box office business.

Another worthy director left out is Ridley Scott, who helmed Gladiator II, which is another epic released this year to public love and critical acclaim. The Paul Mescal starring movie is competing with Wicked and Moana 2 in cinemas.

Even though these incredible directors were left out, their impressive films got several nods. Some other acclaimed and hit shows and movies were left out completely, including HBO’s hit finance show Industry, Steve McQueen directed film Blitz, Amazon Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic series Fallout, and comedy film Kneecap, which swept awards at the British Independent Film Awards.

Prominent 2025 Golden Globes nominations included Wicked’s Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Emilia Pérez stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana, Gladiator II and Inside Out 2 for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and more in the Best Actress category.
