Christina Lahti, the Oscar winner, made a surprise appearance in the Fire Country in season four.

Lahti starred as Ruby Quinn, the estranged mother of Sharon Leone (Diane Farr) and grandmother of Bode Donovan (Max Thieriot).

The Fire Country tells the story of Bode, a young convict with a troubled past. To earn his freedom and shorten his prison time, he joins a conservation camp firefighting program. There he helps fight wildfires in Northern California.

The last episode before Thanksgiving ended with a big surprise as Ruby showed up at Sharon’s door.

Sharon just found out from Walter that Vince has been paying Ruby to stay away ever since their daughter Riley passed away. She called her mother to ask questions but did not expect Ruby to come in person.

Ruby is portrayed as a complex, dubious figure, condescending, emotionally distant and financially shaddy. Her return adds layers of tension to Sharon’s already strained life, as she’s dealing grief over Vince, Bode’s legal troubles and the broader Leone family fallout.

When Ruby arrives, a guarded Sharon lets her in. Ruby tries to give an uneasy smile and talk about childhood memories when Sharon quickly shuts her down.

Ruby defends her absence and recent divorce, insisting the family needed space.

The showrunner Tia Napolitano teased that Ruby’s return “stirs up everything” for Sharon and set as stage for an eventual reunion with grandson, Bode.

The Fire Country airs every Friday on CBS.
