NEW DELHI: The Indian Supreme Court on Friday struck down the 99th Constitutional Amendment which changed the procedure for appointment of judges.
The 99th Constitutional Amendment which provided the formation of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) was declared unconstitutional.
The NJAC had been set up by the central government to appoint judges.
In its ruling the Indian Supreme Court observed that the system to appoint judges had existed in the Constitution prior to the 99th Constitutional Amendment.
