Flamengo scores late to win Rio state title

SAO PAULO: Flamengo scored in stoppage time to draw 1-1 with Vasco da Gama on Sunday and win the Rio de Janeiro state championship for a record 33rd time.

Midfielder Marcio Araujo scored the equalizer in the first minute of injury time to give Flamengo the state title — its fifth in the last eight years and first since 2011.

Flamengo had the tiebreak advantage because it had the competition´s best campaign entering the final.

The teams also drew 1-1 in the first leg last week.Vasco da Gama, seeking its first state title since 2003, opened the scoring at the packed Maracana with a penalty by midfielder Douglas in the 76th.

Araujo´s title-clincher came from the rebound of a header that bounced off the crossbar and passed in front of the goal before being kicked into the net. (AP)
