KARACHI: The Sindh government has suggested that the local government elections should be held in March. Besides, it has also proposed holding the polls on the same day across the country.
“It’s impossible to conduct the local bodies elections in January,” provincial information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said in a statement issued on Sunday.
“The provincial government needs time to conduct fair, impartial and transparent elections. So it’s better that they are held in March; better still, the polls should be conducted throughout the country on the same day.”
Memon said according to a bill passed by the Sindh Assembly, the provincial government and the election commission were bound to consult with each other before issuing the schedule for the elections. “There should be no haste in preparing the election schedule.”
The minister also said the use of magnetic ink during the polls should be made compulsory and the endorsement of voter lists and enrollment of new voters must also be ensured.
