ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on interior approved the Protection of Pakistan Amendment Bill-2014 on Wednesday.

According to sources, a meeting of the Senate standing committee with Senator Talha Mahmood in the chair unanimously approved the Protection of Pakistan Amendment Bill-2014 under which the authority to shoot miscreants or suspects will rest with officers of Grade-15 and above.

The Protection of Pakistan Amendment Bill will initially be enforced for two years.

Senator Zahid Hamid briefing the committee said that necessary measures have been taken to check misuse of authority, explaining that an affected person could approach the High Court against the sentence of a special court.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had insisted that power to allow use of extreme force (shooting someone) should be given to officers in Grade-17 and above.
