Diabetes a growing health condition for children in Pakistan
KARACHI: With 6.8 per cent prevalence among adults, the rate of diabetes is the 7th highest in the world.

During a training program organised by National Institute of Child Health (NICH) experts said diabetes in the juvenile population is increasing at an alarming rate.

Senior medical experts addressing the three day workshop attended by some 50 doctors from across the country said there was dearth of awareness and focus on Juvenile Diabetes or Type 1 diabetes enhancing all chances of avoidable complications.

Proper management was said to be largely helpful in turning of Diabetes Type One turned into Diabetes Type Two the adult type as these kids age.

To address this gap of knowledge and information NICH teamed up with concerned bodies to promote the better understanding and management of Type 1 diabetes in the pediatric population of Pakistan, said Prof. Jamal Raza Executive Director NICH.

Experts were invited from Australia, USA, Japan and Thailand to conduct the workshop thereby imparting the benefit of their training knowledge and experience to doctors in Pakistan.

The workshop included a range of topics focusing on Type 1 diabetes its management risks and complications (diabetes) management in a school setting etc.

The Workshop on Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes was also supported by Sanofi claimed to have led the field in diabetes research and development for almost a century from the first manufacture of insulin through to current day development of insulin and oral therapies.

NICH a 500 bedded hospital is the premier children s hospital of the country and currently one of the largest and only specialist children hospital in Sindh.
