Govt to challenge ECP suspension of Farmers’ package in SC
ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to challenge the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decision of suspending the Farmer’s package in the Supreme Court.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt to immediately approach the Supreme Court. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the prime minister to address problems faced by the agricultural sector.

During the meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the package was for the entire country and not just a specific region.

On September 30, the ECP announced that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Farmers’ package was a violation of the electoral code. The ECP decided to stop implementation of the package till December 3.

PM Nawaz had announced on September 15, a comprehensive Rs341 billion relief package for farmers, with special cash relief for cotton and rice cultivators.
Addressing a gathering of farmers at the Jinnah Convention Centre, the prime minister said he felt the pain of peasants and farmers and wanted to announce the relief package without any delay.
