KARACHI: Light rain is expected to continue in different areas of Karachi on Tuesday as the city reels from the impact of a heavy downpour it witnessed yesterday.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast light spells of rain in the provincial capital throughout the day. However, the city is unlikely to see another heavy spell of rain till later in the week.

The monsoon weather is expected to continue in Karachi until September 30 with another bout of rain predicted to enter the city in the next four or five days.

The MET department has also said that winds from the sea are expected to pick up significantly and might hit the city on Wednesday morning, advising citizens to take necessary precautions.

Earlier on Monday, stormy rainfall had flooded the streets of Karachi and brought traffic to a standstill in parts of the city. Several areas plunged into darkness as 200 K-Electric (KE) feeders tripped.

Federal Minister Ali Zaidi, in wake of the city’s situation due to continuing rain spells, said that it should be declared a state of emergency to resolve the city's issue.

Zaidi said that without resolving Karachi’s issues, especially related to cleanliness, Pakistan’s economy cannot be alleviated.

The minister, who earlier went on a cleaning drive in the metropolis, said that officials pick up garbage from one spot but then new garbage is piled up in its place.

"A State of Emergency must be declared in Karachi to fix this metropolis. Unless we fix this city, reviving Pakistan economically is nothing but a pipe dream," he said in a post on the social networking platform Twitter.
