27 people rescued while ice fishing in Canada lake

MONTREAL: Canadian rescuers on Friday saved a group of 26 who were trapped drifting on an ice patch where they had been fishing on a large Ontario lake, officials said.

The ice-fishing enthusiasts were trapped on the two kilometer (1.2 mile) long breakaway piece of ice after it cut off from the mainland in strong winds, a police spokesman told public broadcaster CBC.

Five people fell into the frigid water of lake Simcoe from the ice and one was hospitalized, but police said none of the injuries were serious. (AFP)
