Well-known Tamil actor Vijay recently launched a political party in Tamil Nadu after leaders of the Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) appointed him as the party chief.

The newly formed party, called "Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam," which loosely translates to "Tamil Nadu Victory Party," is expected to make its mark in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 2026.

Vijay has stated that his party will not be contesting in the Lok Sabha elections and will not support any other political party, as decided in its recently held general council and executive council meetings, NDTV reported.

"I have decided to complete the film I have already committed to, without affecting the party work and completely involve myself in the politics of public service. I consider this as my gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu," Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted, citing Vijay.

His announcement has sparked spontaneous celebrations from his fans across the state, which is known for stars transitioning from cinema to politics, including the late veterans Maruthur Gopalan (MG) Ramachandran MG Ramachandran and Jayaram Jayalalithaa.

Vijay, known for his remarkable acting in 68 films, has been pursuing political ambitions for over a decade and has been involved in fan clubs in various charity initiatives, including food distribution, educational scholarships and libraries, among others.

Recently, he organised a programme to honour student toppers in public exams where he encouraged them to read about leaders, and advised them to "take what's good and leave the rest."
