Maggie Gyllenhaal has been named Jury President for the 83rd Venice Film Festival, which will take place from September 2 to September 12, 2026.

The announcement was made by La Biennale di Venezia after a recommendation from festival director Alberto Barbera, whose term has been extended until 2028.

This means she will lead the main jury at one of the biggest film festivals in the world, where major awards like the Golden Lion are decided.

She now joins a long list of well known names who have taken this role in the past, including Isabelle Huppert, Julianne Moore, Bong Joon Ho and Cate Blanchett.

In her statement, Gyllenhaal said she feels very honoured to take on this responsibility.

However, the star also spoke warmly about Venice, saying that it is a festival that gives space to unique and different kinds of films.

The filmmaker added that she wants to approach the role with curiosity and respect for filmmakers and their work, focusing on understanding their vision.

Festival director Alberto Barbera praised her journey, pointing out her strong work as both an actor and a director.

He also mentioned her film The Lost Daughter, which was shown at Venice and received praise, along with her recent work behind the camera.

The jury will decide top awards like Best Film, Best Director and acting prizes, with more members to be announced later.
