Nvidia CEO rejects AI doomsday fears: ‘We should go as fast as we can'

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang isn't losing sleep over predictions that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity. In fact, he wants the industry to keep moving as quickly as it can.

Huang pushed back against growing calls to slow the development of increasingly powerful AI models.

In an interview with CBS News, the 63-year-old tech leader said: “We should go as fast as we can irrespective of anybody else.”

That puts the Nvidia boss on the other side of a debate that has become increasingly difficult for Silicon Valley to ignore.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for AI companies to slow the improvement of their most powerful models, warning that the technology is advancing faster than the safeguards around it.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon went considerably further when he resigned earlier this month, saying researchers building the technology genuinely fear that AI could eventually pose an existential threat to humanity.

When asked about predictions that AI could bring about the end of the world by 2030, the Nvidia boss put his estimate at exactly zero: “However it's characterised, 2030 is not going to be the end of the world.”

“There is a 0% chance it's going to be the end of the world.”

That doesn't mean Huang thinks AI companies should throw caution aside. He said moving quickly shouldn't mean putting unfinished or dangerous products into people's hands.

“We would never ever, and never should, ship products before they're ready, deliver products that are unsafe,” he said.

But slowing the underlying development of AI is another matter.
