Celine Dion honours legend John Farnham with ‘You're the Voice' rendition

Celine Dion’s appearance at the John Farnham tribute concert carried a special significance. 

Appearing by satellite from Paris at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, on Sunday, September 20, the My Heart Will Go On hitmaker performed Farnham’s enduring anthem You’re the Voice as part of The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend – The Celebration Concert.

While the one-off event featured more than 120 performers, the Queen of Power Ballads had a personal connection to the song and to Farnham.

She recalled that she had previously performed the song as a duet with him during a visit to Melbourne.

Before beginning her live rendition, she addressed Farnham directly, describing him as a “deep inspiration” and saying she had always loved hearing him sing.

The moment was especially poignant because of the circumstances surrounding both artists.

Farnham, 77, was absent from the concert as his health has deteriorated in recent months following his cancer treatment.

His family said he now requires continuous oxygen, uses a wheelchair and receives 24-hour nursing care at home.

In May, Farnham confirmed that the surgeries associated with his cancer treatment had ended his singing career, saying performing onstage was no longer possible.

Dion, 58, has likewise faced major health challenges. She has been living with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that has affected her ability to perform and forced her to step back from parts of her career.

Her return to a major musical occasion, even through a remote performance, consequently gave her appearance an added resonance.
