Scotland striker Robbie Ure opens up on Rangers' exit: 'I wasn't good enough'

Scotland striker Robbie Ure has opened up about his decision to exit Rangers as a teenager for the first time.

Ure-22 left Ibrox after he didn’t find opportunities to secure a place in the senior team and moved to Anderlecht in 2023, before he inked with the Swedish club IK Sirius in 2025.

After that, he did really well in Scandinavia, netting 31 goals in 50 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Ure said, “Yeah, it was difficult. All I’d ever known was Rangers. Going in every single day since I was probably eight years old.”

"So that’s all I’d ever known. But I felt like it was something I had to do. I felt like I wasn’t good enough for Rangers at the time, which is normal for many 18-year-olds.

So, it was nothing that affected my confidence. I just felt like I needed a step before the final step or something like that," Ure explained.

Reflecting on his decision to leave the club, Ure said, “I would have loved to have stayed. But I felt like I needed to leave. I think I knew myself that I wasn’t going to play, which I think I accepted. Because you’re at a club like Rangers. It’s difficult for many 18-year-olds to play. I needed a change of scenery and a fresh start.”

Ure, signed for Spain’s one of the biggest clubs, Sevilla, for an initial fee of £5.5 million last month, and his fast ascent has now earned him a spot into the Scotland national team.

Scotland will play Slovenia (home and away), Switzerland, and North Macedonia over the next three weeks, with the opening game of the Nations League campaign scheduled for 2pm BST on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
