MIAMI: Thousands of sharks were photographed migrating through the coastal waters off Palm Beach, Fla., by a fast-thinking helicopter pilot who caught the action on his phone’s video camera.
The footage taken by Steve Irwin of Island Marine Services shows countless sharks, some swimming into the surf, in an annual migration northward.
The toothy fish will later breed off the coast of Georgia and the Carolinas before heading southward in the fall.
Marine experts said most of the sharks were blacktips and spinners, which have bitten humans in the past but are not considered “maneaters” or particularly dangerous.
They say the appearance is a chance for snorkelers and scuba divers to get close and observe the underwater mass migration during early February. |
