KARACHI: The mercury soared to 40 degrees Celsius in the city on Wednesday, as the continuing heat wave entered its fourth day.

The Met Dept said the weather will be extremely hot today as the temperature will remain 40 to 42 degree Celsius.

According to the department, the temperature will likely drop after Saturday and the weather will turn slightly pleasant afterwards.

Based on records from the past 30 years, the temperature in Karachi averages up to 36 degrees Celsius in the month of October. However, weather experts predicted a fresh wave of heat that pushed mercury to 38-40 degrees this time.

Earlier, Met Director Abdul Rasheed said that the sea breeze, which normally keeps Karachi's high temperature in check, changed directions, resulting in an increase in the mercury level.

Officials had advised drinking lots of water to brave the heat and avoid dehydration.
