KARACHI: A new case knife attack was reported late Thursday after a 20-year-old woman was attacked with a sharp object in the city's Malir vicinity.

The injured woman, while talking to the media, said that the assailant was riding a motorcycle and attacked her while she was on her way to a tuition center.

Karachi Police released pictures — screengrabs from the CCTV footage — of the suspect Saturday night, wherein the assailant can be seen riding a motorbike moments before attacking one of the victims. Photo: Geo News

"The man was wearing a cream-coloured shirt," she said, adding that the attacker was not wearing a helmet.

Soon after the incident was reported, the police issued a statement denying any similarity of the attack with the series of knife attacks on woman in the metropolis.

“This case has no similarity with other [knife attack] cases,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi Noman Siddiqui said, adding that the victim was eve-teased a month ago too.

He added that other victims had been attacked from the rear, while the today's victim's hand was injured in the attack.

The mystery of Karachi knife attacks has remained unresolved with legal complications restricting the transfer of the suspect to the metropolis from Gujranwala, who is believed to be involved in a series of incidents that sparked fear in Karachi.

At least 15 women were injured in attacks by a knife-wielding man in Karachi between September 25 to October 5. Later, there were no clues as to where did the suspect disappear to.

With seven different cases registered, police in Karachi began connecting the dots, leading to a suspect, Wasim, involved in similar incidents in Sahiwal, Punjab, who got out on bail a month and a half ago.

However, it became difficult for the Karachi police to bring the suspect, arrested from Gujranwala, to Karachi for not following the protocols.

Sources had said the Karachi Police managed to get the suspect nabbed by CIA Punjab, without bringing the matter to the notice of Punjab Home Department.

However, DIG East Sultan Khawaja said the knife attack suspect recently arrested in Punjab was not involved in the attacks.

There is no evidence which suggests that Waseem came to Karachi, Khawaja had said before a Senate committee.

A total of 38 suspects have been detained in relation to the incidents, Khawaja further added.
