KARACHI: Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former PM Nawaz Sharif, Tuesday said the democracy in the country is defeating all conspiracies against it.

In a series of tweets, the former first daughter said they bow their heads in humility and gratitude, praising Almighty Allah.

Her tweets came as the National Assembly rejected a proposed constitutional amendment seeking to bar disqualified members from heading a political party.

The proposed amendment was aimed at depriving Maryam's father and thrice the prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership.

Without naming his father, Maryam said everybody wanted "a single person minus," but they could not, adding, "He was not a person and an ideology cannot be subtracted."

"This is the verdict of the people," she said. "Democracy stands firm against conspiracies for the first time."

"This gives hope for a [better] future," Maryam added.

She also paid tribute to the ones who stood by her father despite all the "threats and pressure."
