Rain, thunder turn Karachi weather chilly

KARACHI: Heavy rain with thunder and lightning lashed Karachi late Sunday night, turning the weather chilly and plunging large swathes of the metropolis into darkness. 

Areas that received heavy rainfall included Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Malir Cantt, Defence, Clifton, as well as neighbourhoods in the vicinity of the Karachi airport and near Shahrah-e-Faisal and I.I. Chundrigar Road.

Power outages hit Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Model Colony, Saddar, North Karachi, Orangi Town, Defence, Garden, and other areas overnight. 

Electricity was restored to most of the city by Monday morning, with K-Electric confirming power supply restoration in areas of Tariq Road, Numaish, Passport Office, FB area, Gulshan Chowrangi, Lucky Star and Mohammad Ali Society. 

The power utility company said its teams were working on restoring power supply in areas still without electricity. 

The unusual winter showers came as a pleasant surprise for the Karachiites, as the night sky was lit up with lightning flashes. 

Many took to social media to share their excitement at the sudden change in the weather.

Some knew it was only a matter of time before the rain engulfed the city into darkness.

Intermittent rain is expected to continue in Karachi today, keeping the minimum temperature around 10-11 C. 

The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts widespread rain with snowfall over hills in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore divisions, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during the next 24 hours. Rain is also expected at isolated places in Sargodha, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, Sahiwal, Mirpurkhas and Thatta divisions.
