Senate election: Nomination papers scrutiny to take place on March 19

  • Senate elections on 48 vacant seats will be held on April 2. 
  • Candidates can withdraw nomination papers by March 27.
  • Preliminary list of Balochistan candidates released.


With Senate elections inching closer, the scrutiny of nomination papers for elections on 48 vacant seats of the upper house of parliament will be carried out on March 19.

In order to fill the vacant seats, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has already announced holding the Senate elections on April 2.

The revised list of the candidates will be issued on the 26th of this month whilst the candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by March 27.

In the federal capital, members of the National Assembly will elect members of the Senate against one general seat and one seat for technocrats including Ulema.

Members of the four provincial assemblies will elect senators for seven general seats, two women seats, and two seats for technocrats including Ulema from each province, as well as one seat for non-Muslims from both Punjab and Sindh provinces.

42 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the Senate election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to a list issued by ECP KP chapter spokesperson Sohail Ahmad, 25 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for seven general seats.

Similarly, ten candidates have submitted their nomination papers for two technocrat and Ulema seats in the province.

Seven women candidates have submitted nomination papers for two reserved seats for women from the KP.

Meanwhile, the Balochistan election commission released the preliminary list of candidates for the province’s vacant seats in the upper house of the parliament.

According to a spokesperson of the provincial election commission, the nomination papers of 38 candidates have been approved for the 11 seats of the Balochistan in Senate.

Among vacant seats , 7 are general seats, 2 for technocrats and 2 for women.

The spokesman further said that the nomination papers of 17 candidates were approved for 7 general seats of the Senate. The nomination papers of 13 candidates were approved for 2 technocrat seats while nomination papers of 8 candidates were approved for 2 seats in the women category, the official added.
