Julie Bowen recalls terrifying health scare that led to pacemaker

Julie Robert looked back at the health scare she faced in her 20s.

In a recent chat on the July 1 episode of the Inside of You podcast the 55-year-old actress revealed that she had a heart condition when she was 29 and could possibly pass out.

The Modern Family actress got a pacemaker in order to survive, after doctors recommendations.

“I have a low resting heart rate,” Bowen shared explaining that she has sick sinus syndrome caused by a condition called hypervagotonia, (an abnormal increase in the activity of the vagus nerve, leading to a slower than normal heart rate.)

“My pacemaker is set so that it can't go below 45.”

Bowen, who used to be an active runner, revealed that she was unaware of her heart condition until her sister who was a new medical graduate at the time observed her heart rate.

“She was like, ‘That is not what they've been telling you... That means you need to go to a cardiologist,’” Bowen remembered.

“I shot the pilot of Ed and immediately had to go get a pacemaker afterwards… I was like, 'Oh my God. My life is over. This is so weird. I'm gonna die.'” she added.
