Social media buzzed with praise for the man who wrestled the gun from the alleged shooter during the tragic incident at Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14, that left 15 people killed and dozens injured.
The name of the “hero” bystander who was seen in the viral footage snatching a gun from one of the Bondi Beach attackers has been revealed as Ahmed al Ahmed, 43.
The widely circulated video, shared across social media platforms, shows Ahmed rushing the gunman and seizing his firearm and aiming it back at him, which prompted the attacker’s retreat.
Ahmed, a hero bystander, happens to be a fruit shop owner from Sutherland Shire. Ahmed is married and has two children.
He is still hospitalized, where he underwent surgery for the wounds he sustained during the scuffle on his arm and hand, his family speaks to Australian broadcaster 7News Australia.
One of the relatives of Ahmed, who told the television outside of the hospital where victims of the attack are getting treatment, said, "Relatives would be allowed to see him soon. We hope he will be fine, he is a hero, percent, he is a hero.”
On the other hand, the premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, called the bystander a “genuine hero.”
Speaking in a press conference in Sydney, he said, “The attack represents some of our worst fears about terrorism.”
“A man walking up to a gunman who had fired on the community and single-handedly disarming him, putting his own life at risk to save the lives of countless other people,” he added.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which is a day of joy, a celebration of faith.”
The premier added, showing resolve to eradicate such acts of terrorism in future, “There is no place for this hate, violence, and terrorism in our nation. Let me be clear, we will eradicate it.”
Locals have recalled the horrific incident when they started hearing up to 50 gunshots in the Archer Park area at around 6:45 pm local time, where up to 1,000 people had gathered for an event to celebrate the first day of the Jewish holiday called Hanukkah.
