Dutch footballer Cody Gakpo has suffered a heartbreaking personal loss amid the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his partner announced that she suffered a miscarriage and the couple lost their unborn baby.
The Liverpool star’s partner, Noa van der Bij, shared the devastating news through an emotional social media post, revealing that their baby boy passed away during pregnancy.
The couple had previously announced that they were expecting their second child together. They had also chosen the name Elijah Raphael Gakpo for their unborn son.
In the emotional message, Van der Bij said: “With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy.”
She expressed gratitude to fans for their “love and support.”
The tragic development comes while Gakpo is away with the Netherlands national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he has been one of the country's standout performers.
Despite the personal tragedy, reports suggest that the Liverpool forward will remain with the Dutch squad after discussions with his partner and family members.
The Dutch Football Association also expressed support for the player and his family, describing the loss as a deeply private matter and asking for respect for their privacy.
Gakpo, who plays for Premier League giants Liverpool, has not publicly commented on the loss beyond the statement shared by his partner.
