Strict security in place, flights diverted from Lahore Airport ahead of Modi arrival

LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will receive his Indian counterpart at the Lahore Airport. It is not confirmed if the two leaders will hold their meeting at the airport lounger or whether the Indian Prime Minister will accompany Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Jati Umra where his Raiwind residence is located.

In light of his arrival and the meeting between the two leaders which is expected to last between one and two hours, special security arrangements have been put in place.

Meanwhile at Lahore Airport flight operations have been severely affected with flights being diverted or being grounded while high security presence is already in place.

Indian PM Modi is being accompanied by a 120 strong entourage. It is expected that the Indian PM may visit Raiwind and routes leading to Jati Umra have been closed fro VVIP movement.

Earlier on Friday the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to express his desire to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Lahore today.

Modi tweeted, "Looking forward to meeting PM Nawaz Sharif in Lahore today afternoon, where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi."




Modi who will be heading home from Afghanistan today is expected to stop over in Lahore this afternoon.

The Indian prime minister also telephoned his Pakistani counterpart to wish him a happy birthday.
